The Thatched Cottage of Du fu is located by the side of the Huanhua Stream in Chengdu's western suburb. It was the residence of Du fu, the great poet of the Tang Dynasty when he took refuge in Chengdu.
Du Fu (712-70 AD), one of China's most famous poets, left hometown at the tender age of 20, becoming a court official at the former capital in Chang'an. Du Fu's civil service duties did not last long however, and he was captured by rebels and forced to flee the city for Chengdu after only a few years. It was in Chengdu, at this small and simple house, that Du Fu was inspired to write more than 200 poems which are regarded today as masterpieces of realist poetry.
Du fu's Thatched Cottage covers an area of 16 hectares. The Gate, the Screen Wall, the Lobby, the Hall of Verse History, and the Gong Bu Temple are lined one by one along the middle axis, flanked by corridors and other auxiliary buildings. The bronze statue of Du fu in the Hall of Verse History is broad-minded. The clay sculpture of Du fu was enshrined in the Gong Bu Temple is very lifelike. Among and between them are trees and bamboo groves, winding brooks and linking small bridges.
All these give the place an atmosphere of solemnity, meanwhile a sense of beauty and grace. Around the hones are bamboo fences and inside the fences are vegetable and herb plots, easily remind people of the scenes described in Du fu's poems. While taking a quiet walk in such a historical and cultural environment, visitors are apt to be brought back to the ancient times.
Zhai Lane historical & cultural district
It consists of Kuan Lane, Zhai Lane and Jing Lane of which there are three parallelly-arranged old style streets and courtyard houses. It is one of the three major historical & cultural conservation areas in Chengdu City, it is not only the last relic of the city pattern of "thousand-year-old young city" and the one-hundred-year original architectural structure of old Chengdu, but also the only existing copy in southern China from the lane (Hutong) culture and architectural style of northern China.
According to the plan, the control area is 479mu (1mu=1/15 hectare), in which the kernel conservation area covers 108mu. Based on the guiding principles of "conservation first, keeping old styles while repairing" and "former site and original form, reconstruction for old buildings that fell apart", up to now, the harmonious renovation of the peripheral buildings and architectural styles and features in the kernel conservation area has already been completed, including 23 courtyards built-up, 20 courtyards under construction, 2 courtyards to be built.
It is anticipated that, by the end of March, the reconstruction of 45 complete courtyard-style buildings have been accomplished, by the end of April, the paving and decoration of the landscape in the streets and on the square have been finished, and the commencement ceremony of the cultural street had been formally held in May.

Here, there are dazzling alternating shade and shadow, the circulation of ten li (1li=1/2 kilometer) beaded curtains, crowded noises from public houses, the musical sound of two-stringed instruments (huqin) for accompaniment of Sichuan opera, as well as drifting fragrance of fine foods.
